It isn't the 'bitter" that was offensive, it was the 'cling to' phrase that will hurt

With the furor over the remarks Barack Obama made in San Francisco the subject of much attention, I suggest that it isn't the "bitter" phrase that's hard to swallow, but the "cling to" usage which implies a certain pathetic behavior when attributed to anyone.

So let's see - "cling to" implies pathetic and then let's use it in conjunction with gun owners and those that are "religious"..... and we wonder why we can't win certain voters over?

Hell, he could have used "Nascar"  in the same sentence  as "cling to" then we'd be really screwed.

Face it, it was a poor choice of words.

Bitter.... okay, cause we are - most of us, plus concerned, engaged, involved, motivated but...

Here's a hint - never use any form of the word "cling" in a sentence that involves voters.

Big mistake.

I agree with that (2.00 / 1)

It will be interesting to see how Obama addresses this issue at the CNN forum on religion tonight as well as at the debate.

Bitter, Cling, Antipathy (2.00 / 1)

The entire litany of Obama's private speech to fundraisers was offensive, divisive and inexcusable. One was no worse than the other- but each person will take one that they find most offensive.
I don't see him as elitist, it makes me wonder if this is how he sees his own community in the Wright church and projects that onto others.

White people are insecure! (none / 0)

Wait, is "insecure" better?

"When their economic policies fail, when the country's coming apart rather than coming together, what do they do? They find the most economically insecure white men and scare the living daylights out of them. They know if they can keep us looking at each other across a racial divide, if I can look at Bobby Rush and think, Bobby wants my job, my promotion, then neither of us can look at George Bush and say, 'What happened to everybody's job? What happened to everybody's income? What ... have ... you ... done ... to ... our ... country?'"

How dare Bill Clinton call white rural poor people insecure! How elitist! What do we have to be insecure about! I'M SO OFFENDED!

Yes, in this instance the word insecure is better (2.00 / 1)

than "cling" which implies baby like behavior- babies "cling"

Definitely a word politicians should avoid

Re: It isn't the 'bitter" that was offensive (none / 0)

I think the whole issue is Obama's unwise use of the term "cling" without qualifying it by saying that they are only clinging to those issues in the voting booth.

Obama didn't mean to imply that people cling to religion, or develop a fondness for guns when they are economically disadvantaged. He was talking about how many poor people consistently vote against their economic interest (Republican) because Republicans have been so effective at making the elections about  things like gay marriage, gun control, and religion.

It's why Democrats lose elections that they should easily win. Clinton, for piling onto Obama over this and making it a big story...is doing the GOP's work for them once again.

...sigh....and I thought the Democrats might just win this one.

Silly me.
